University schedules events to celebrate women's history

SPRINGFIELD — Missouri State University is providing an assortment of activities honoring women and addressing current gender issues in recognition of Women’s History Month.

The university will present speakers, films, a dinner, workshops and theatrical presentations as part of its annual celebration of women’s history.

“These events are meant to raise awareness of issues facing women today, as well as give perspective on the history of women’s place in society, both in America and abroad,” said Dr. Stacy Ulbig, assistant professor of political science. Following is a list of events.

Feb. 23-25
The “Vagina Monologues” will show at 7 p.m. in Carrington Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for non-students and can be purchased the night of the show as well as from fundraising tables on the 2nd floor of the Plaster Student Union (PSU) during the week of the show.
 
Feb. 26
An open forum discussion on the “Vagina Monologues” will be held at 5 p.m. in PSU, Room 312B.
 
Feb. 27
“Tupperware,” a film about the lady behind the Tupperware marketing plan and original Tupperware party, will be accompanied by a speaker from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Strong Hall, Room 302.

“Ain’t I a Woman,” a play presented in conjunction with African American History month activities, will be presented at 7 p.m. in the PSU Theater.

March 1
“Moving History Forward,” a photo exhibit featuring intergenerational pictures of women, opens on the 3rd floor of the PSU with a reception at 5:15 p.m. in PSU Room 308.
 
March 5
The Women of Distinction Dinner and Award Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m at the Executive Conference Center, 910 W. Battlefield Road. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 in advance for non-students ($20 at the door). Proceeds will benefit the Family Violence Center. Checks should be made payable to Alliance of Professional Organizations, and sent c/o Vicky Lindsey, KPM, 2003 E. Sunshine, Springfield, MO 65804.

March 6
The film “Mary Pickford: America’s Sweetheart” honors Pickford, an actress and business woman. Deborah Larson, assistant professor of media, journalism and film, will speak following the movie. The film will be screened at 6:30 p.m. in Strong Hall, Room 302.
 
March 8
In honor of International Women’s Day, Missouri State University’s United Nations Depository and Jane D.O.E. will sponsor a speaker at 6 p.m. in the PSU Parliamentary Room. Vladislava Petrova, a visiting lecturer at Missouri State University, will speak on sex trafficking.
 
March 13
“Maid in America,” a film exploring the lives of three immigrant women working in America, shows at 6:30 p.m. in Strong Hall, Room 302. Yolanda Lorge, a member of the Springfield Grupo Latinoamerico, will speak in conjunction with the film.
 
March 27
An Academy Award-winning costume designer is recognized in the film, “Fashion and Style: Edith Head,” showing at 6:30 p.m. in Strong Hall, Room 302. Cynthia Winstead, professor of theatre and dance, will speak.
 
March 28
Dr. Sharmistha Self, economics assistant department head, will make a presentation titled “Gender Development, Institutions and Economic Development” from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in Strong Hall, Room 350.
 
March 29
Mary Adkins with Source of Sanity will conduct a workshop from 6-8 p.m. in PSU, Room 313.
 
April 3
The film “Playing Unfair: The Media Image of Female Athletes” will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Strong Hall, Room 302. Dr. Martha Wilkerson, per course faculty in the sociology department, will speak after the film.
