Gifted mathematics students to compete

SPRINGFIELD —The Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematics Department of Missouri State University will present the State Elementary and the State Middle School Math Contest Finals April 28 at Hammons Student Center.

Nearly 1,000 gifted students have qualified for the state finals by placing first, second or third in a grade-specific test at the regional level which measures mathematical estimation, computation, conceptual understanding, and problem solving abilities.

Senator Norma Champion, Vice-Chair of the Senate Education Committee, will speak at the awards ceremony, offering encouragement and words of wisdom to these gifted children.

“I think this is a great event,” said Dr. David Ashley, associate professor of mathematics. “I get to meet some really gifted children who are great problem solvers that love mathematics.”
