SPRINGFIELD — Missouri State University recently awarded scholarships to seven students who exemplify the university’s statewide mission in public affairs. The students were selected to receive the Pepsi-Cola Public Affairs Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each. The students who receive these annual scholarships are undergraduates who have a demonstrated record of service, leadership and qualities consistent with the goals of Missouri State’s statewide public affairs mission.

“We had a very strong group of applicants,” said Dr. Pauline Nugent, professor of modern and classical languages at Missouri State and chair of the Pepsi-Cola Public Affairs Award. “The amount of public awareness and public service at Missouri State leads us to believe that our public affairs mission is alive and well and being translated into action.”

The following are recipients of the Pepsi-Cola Public Affairs Scholarship:

  • Whitney Bauer of Springfield is a senior English education major.
  • Alexandra Cable of De Soto is a senior public relations major.
  • Elizabeth Clark of Tuscumbia is a senior elementary education major.
  • Christin Green of Springfield is a senior individualized major.
  • Bethany Hartzler of Gunn City is a sophomore public relations major.
  • Jessica Johnson of Springfield is a senior political science major.
  • Austyn Sanders of Carthage is a senior political science major.

As part of the application process, students submitted an application form, a one page personal statement addressing the role and importance of public affairs in their lives and one letter of recommendation addressing their record of service. Application eligibility guidelines require that the students must have completed a minimum of 45 hours at Missouri State by the beginning of the spring semester, be enrolled at the university for consecutive semesters and have an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher. Scholarship winners must be enrolled in at least 12 hours each semester.
