Missouri State Board of Governors to hold meeting in Kansas City

SPRINGFIELD — Missouri State University’s Board of Governors will hold its Sept. 14 meeting at the Allen Village Charter School, 706 W. 42nd St., Kansas City, Mo. This marks the first time the Board has met in Kansas City.

The meeting will be hosted by Kansas City resident Phyllis Washington, principal of the Allen Village Charter School. Washington has been a member of the Board since 2003 when she replaced the first Kansas City representative on the Board, attorney Paul Redfearn.

“I am thrilled to have the Board meet in Kansas City,” said Washington. “Missouri State has students from all 114 counties in Missouri, 47 states and 80 countries, so it serves the entire state. It is very appropriate that we have meetings occasionally in other parts of the state. We hope to use these few days to showcase Missouri State to the Kansas City area.”

Activities scheduled concerning and in conjunction with the Board meeting include:

Thursday, Sept. 13
Missouri State University President Dr. Michael T. Nietzel, Board representatives and other staff will attend a high school counselor and community college adviser luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the Kaufman Foundation, 4801 Rockhill Road.
A prospective student informational reception will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Arrowhead Stadium’s Arrowhead Club, One Arrowhead Drive.

Friday, Sept. 14
Board of Governors’ Committee Meetings will begin at 9 a.m. at the Allen Village Charter School.
The Board of Governors luncheon will be take place from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Allen Village Charter School.
The Board of Governors will meet at 1 p.m.at the Allen Village Charter School.
A reception for Kansas City alumni will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the Westin Crown Center Century Ballroom A.
 
Saturday, Sept. 15
Board members, administrators, alumni and friends of the university will travel from Kansas City to Manhattan, Kan. to see the Missouri State Bears take on the Kansas State Wildcats at 6 p.m. A pre-game tailgate event will take place from 4-6 p.m. in Cat Town.

Missouri State will soon hire a full-time staff member to serve the Kansas City area primarily for student recruitment, but also to assist with alumni and development initiatives. The university has a similar operation in place in St. Louis.

Missouri State has about 1,500 students and more than 8,100 alumni living in the Kansas City area.      

Passed and signed into law in 2005, Senate Bill 98, which authorized the name change to Missouri State University, stipulates that the Board of Governors should be comprised of 10 members, nine voting members representing all nine Congressional districts in the state and one non-voting student member. There are currently two vacancies on the Board.

The Board president is Mary Sheid from West Plains and the vice president is Mike Duggan from Chesterfield.
