Springfield — The media, journalism, and film department at Missouri State University has an active fall semester planned with many opportunities to view new and older films.

The 10th annual Manhattan Short Film Festival will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Plaster Student Union (PSU) Theater. The festival consists of 12 finalists chosen from 456 entries spanning more than 32 countries. Springfield was selected as Missouri’s exclusive participating city. In addition, 100 different venues from around the world are hosting the festival, during which audience members will be asked to vote for the film they believe deserves to win. Votes will be complied from all audiences and the winner will be announced in New York City on Sept. 30.

Tickets can be purchased at the door. Prices are $10 for non-students and $8 for students. All ticket proceeds will go to the department’s Digital Film Scholarship Fund. Prior to the festival, interviews with the finalists can be accessed at www.msfilmfest.com.

The University Film Series: Visions of the Future runs from Sept. 10-Dec. 3 with all films showing at 7 p.m. in the PSU Theater. The series includes Fred M. Wilcox’s “Forbidden Planet” (1956) on Sept. 10, Stanly Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968) on Oct. 29, Francois Truffaut’s “Fahrenheit 451” (1966) on Oct. 1, Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Solaris” (1972) on Nov. 12, James Cameron’s “The Terminator” (1984) on Nov. 26, and Terry Gilliam’s “Brazil” (1985) on Dec. 3.

“We have revamped our film series this year to offer a theme-related series, with classic science fiction in the fall and Alfred Hitchcock in the spring,” said Dr. Karen Buzzard, media, journalism, and film department head. “Our fall series, Sci-Fi: Visions of the Future, is a fun series of films that allow us to see visions about life in the future based on speculations about science or technology.”
