SPRINGFIELD — Dr. Madeleine Kernen will assume the position of acting director of the International Center at Missouri State University. The International Center is a new endeavor recommended by faculty committees and individuals engaged in international and global programs and activities.

Kernen, who will continue her role as the modern and classical languages department head, will work with students, faculty, administrators and an advisory council to the center in order to strengthen the academic component of international education and partnership initiatives. The center will also seek to connect language and area studies with experiential programs for faculty and students.

“My most rewarding experience at Missouri State has been to encourage students to go abroad and immerse themselves in another culture and then, upon their return, share in their enthusiasm the experience granted them,” said Kernen. “I am looking forward to facilitate and incorporate such experiences and create new opportunities connecting languages, academic programs and experiential programs off and on campus.”

An internal search for a permanent director will be initiated during the spring 2008 semester.
