SPRINGFIELD — Dr. Benjamin Goss, assistant professor of management at Missouri State University; and Dr. Colby Jubenville, associate professor of sport management at Middle Tennessee State University, founded and launched a new online, open-access resource – the Journal of Sport Administration and Supervision.

The mission of the journal, according to Goss, is to develop, advance, disseminate, promote and preserve knowledge within the academic discipline of sport management by providing an outlet that is both grounded in academic theory and driven by the needs of practitioners and the environment of the sport industry.

“The world of sports affects so many people in so many different ways,” Goss said. “On one hand, it’s a multi-billion-dollar a year industry. On the other hand, it’s one of the most influential and most prominent of all human institutions in our culture. The only things that rival it are probably education, religion and music.”

The research presented on the journal Web site (www.jsasonline.org) will focus on a wide range of topics.

The mission of the journal is being advanced by four primary drivers: phenomenology (or case studies), development of the scholarly sport practitioner, development of social responsibility in sport organizations and stakeholders, and open access.

Regarding open access, Goss said: “Too often, too much good research is put on library shelves or is hanging somewhere in cyber space and it’s just not accessible for one reason or another to the people who really need it.

“We’re looking for research that will help people who are managers in the sport industry do their jobs better. We want information that will help them be more effective and more efficient in their job duties. Unfortunately, we find that too many people aren’t getting enough good information to do their jobs really well.”
