Tiger Writer’s Camp is an annual summer camp for young aspiring writers, who will read, write and illustrate their own pieces of writing during the first weeks of summer school at Carthage R-9 School District. The camp is scheduled from 8-11:30 a.m. each day.
“At the Tiger Writers Camp, we will share a love of writing, practice writing techniques we know are valuable, learn some new writing tricks of the trade, and share our writing with each other and the whole world,” said Elizabeth Salchow, camp director.
Teachers wishing to observe the camp sessions for professional development hours may attend the morning sessions, stay for lunch and participate in an in-service session in the afternoon to discuss the writing techniques utilized with the students and learn how to apply those techniques to their own classrooms, regardless of grade level or content.
The National Writing Project (NWP) recently awarded a grant to Dr. Keri Franklin, assistant professor of English at Missouri State, to fund an NWP site, one of more than 200 housed at universities in the United States. Franklin serves as the OWP director.
The OWP identifies successful teachers of writing across all curriculum areas in Ozarks schools and colleges and successful approaches for the teaching of writing and the uses of writing-to-learn in all subject areas.
The OWP involves teachers in their own writing so that they can better help their students. In addition, the initiative helps teachers examine basic issues of equity and access and their impact on student learning, and makes current research in the field available to assist teachers.
